Press release: 24th Svyaz-Expocomm International Exhibition

During 14 – 17 May 2012 Expocentre Fairgrounds hosted the Svyaz-Expocomm’2012 International Exhibition as part of the Information Communications Days’2012 project.  This is the largest exhibition in Russia and Eastern Europe for telecommunications equipment, control systems, information and mass communications technologies and communication services.  

The event had the official support from the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and traditionally ran under the auspices of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Moscow City Government. The high international reputation of the event is confirmed by the Approved Event Logos of the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) and the Russian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs (RUEF).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Houlin Zhao, Deputy Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), said that Svyas-Expocomm’2012 was an internationally acclaimed event, with a large number of foreign companies participating in it. The exhibition offered specialists of the global telecommunications industry an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and share their invaluable experience.


Žiga Turk, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia noted that Svyaz-Expocomm’2012 helped develop technologies, and provided a platform for fruitful communication, knowledge-sharing, and securing new business leads.

This year’s edition of the exhibition was showcasing the latest achievements and developments of 553 companies from 28 countries. Germany, Canada, China and Taiwan put on display their national pavilions.

The net exhibition space of Svyaz-Expocomm’2012 was nearly 19 000 m2. It presented feature areas including Fixed and Wireless Networks Systems and Equipment; Satellite Navigation and Broadcasting Systems and Equipment; Television and Radio Broadcasting; Telecommunications: End-User Devices, Switching Systems, Monitoring and Control Systems etc.; Hardware; Service Providers, Mobile Operators; Mass Communications, Digital Content, New Media, Television, Web and Print Media, Radio; Information Technologies, System Integration, Software, IT Services.

The exhibition programme was arranged thematically.

14th May was Information Technology Day. It started with the 5th Russian Youth Forum Information Technologies in the World of Communications. The Forum was attended by more than 150 young people from across Russia and the CIS who are actively involved in the ICT sector.

This day also featured the 3rd Russian Information Security Forum, organized by the Coordination Center for TLD RU/ÐÔ with the assistance from the Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media.

Michael Moren, Deputy Director of Interpol Cyber Security and IT Crime Department, and Aleksei Moshkov, General Major of the Russian Police, Head of the IT Crime Counteraction and Prevention Bureau of the Russian Ministry of Interior ‘K’ Agency, spoke about combating cybercrime, and cooperation and collaborative initiatives in this respect.

Andrew Wyckoff, Director of the Science, Technology and Industry Directorate by OECD, and Robert Shlegel, Deputy Head of the Russian State Duma Committee on Sport and Youth Issues, spoke about the role of international intergovernmental organizations in making the Internet secure and affordable. Natalia Kasperskaya, InfoWatch Director; Jeff Moss, ICANN Vice-President on Security and Anrea Rigoni, Director General of the Global Cyber Security Center (GCSEC), took part in a discussion Tools and Ways to Respond to and Prevent DDoS Attacks: International Best Practices. Ruslan Gattarov, a member of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Council, and Andrei Robachevsky, ISOC Programs Director, looked at the role of business and civil society in ensuring information security.

The interactive programme of the Forum allowed many specialists to attend short lectures by prominent web-security experts, ask questions and view current cyberthreats and ways to counter them.

14th May also featured a round-table discussion, a number of parallel master classes and a session of the Interagency Commission on Coordinating the Foundation, Operation and Development of High-Tech Science Parks.

The keynote event on 15th May - Public Management Day - was an enlarged plenary session of the Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media Advisory Board. The meeting reviewed the performance of the telecommunications industry in the previous year and proposed plans for the development of the sector.

16th May was Mass Communications Day which opened with an LTE 4G Mobile Communications round-table discussion.  This day featured an enlarged session of the Mass Communications Committee which discussed the current state of the Russian media industry and the mass media development strategy to 2020.

The 3rd e-Government International Business Forum presented the results of the e-Russia and e-Government national projects.

The International Communications Academy ran the 4th International Forum – MAC’2012 with the subject being Russia in the Global Information Community. The Forum discussed the challenges of Russia’s integration into WTO, the future of mass media and the universal introduction of smart technologies.

Skolkovo Moscow School of Management ran round-table discussions addressing a wide range of challenges facing TV broadcasting.

17th May 2012 was Telecommunications Day and also the closing day of the exhibition. The key event of the day was a Russian conference called Strategy for Modernizing Communication Equipment in Russia’s Regions

The Svyaz-Expocomm’2012 programme ended with an award ceremony celebrating the winners of the National Radiomania’2012 Award. This is an annual event, sponsored by the Russian Non-Profit Organization of Mass Media Specialists and the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, and it is the most prestigious professional award in ICT.

Svyaz-Expocomm’2012 attracted a lot of professionals, put on display the latest achievements in research and technology, presented state-of-the-art equipment, and enabled industry specialists from Russia and other countries to outline a plan for a knowledge-based modernization of the ICT sector in Russia. The total visitor attendance of Svyaz-Expocomm’2012 exceeded 21 600 people, of which 95% were industry specialists.

The next edition of Svyaz-Expocomm Exhibition will take place at Expocentre Fairgrounds on 14th -17th of May 2013.
